MEET THE TEAM: Mikko “Rauhis” – back in Khao Lak after a 10-year break

Mikko “Rauhis” is one of Raya Divers’ long-time team members, and this season marked his return to Khao Lak after a 10-year break. His journey with Raya began back in 2007, and over the years he has worked in several destinations and taken on a variety of roles. For the 25–26 season, Rauhis is working as a Divemaster in Khao Lak, bringing with him plenty of experience, a relaxed attitude, and the kind of easygoing energy that fits Raya life perfectly.

Who are you and what’s your role at Raya Divers?
I’m Mikko “Rauhis”, and for the 25–26 season I’m working as a Divemaster in Khao Lak.

How did you end up at Raya, and where have you worked over the years?
Back in summer 2007, I found a job ad on Raya’s website asking, “Do you want a job that’s deep?” I sent in my application right away, got invited to interviews, and started as a snorkelling guide in Khao Lak in November 2007. Since then, I’ve worked in different roles on Raya Island and in Phuket, as well as doing shorter visits to Koh Lanta and Krabi.

When and how did diving become part of your life?
My first taste of diving in Thailand came during the 2007–2008 season, and little by little it grew into something I really enjoyed and eventually became part of everyday life.

What’s your favourite destination or trip, and where would you take a friend first?
I’d start with the day trips from Khao Lak. I’d take a friend who enjoys snorkelling to Surin, and a diving friend to Richelieu Rock. For someone who loves nature, I’d choose a day trip to Khao Sok. And to finish off a good day, I’d head for sunset at one of the restaurants along Bang Niang beach.

What’s your favourite Thai dish, and where should people try it?
There are plenty of good options. The best tip is to ask the Raya offices in Phuket or Khao Lak for their favourites.

What’s the best part of your job?
The atmosphere at Raya and the very professional staff. The changing destinations throughout the week and the holiday mood of happy guests also make the job something special.

What kind of person really enjoys this kind of work?
Someone hardworking, genuine, willing to learn, and just the right amount of crazy.

What made you come back?
I made a comeback for the 25–26 season after a 10-year break. It’s hard to explain exactly, but you can definitely feel it.

What’s been the funniest moment this winter?
Nuno and Jukkis know how to surprise people week after week. There have been lots of good moments, and almost every day brings a proper laugh.

What would you say to someone thinking about applying for a job at Raya?
Go for it and send in an application. The job will teach you a lot, and the people here are the real deal. There’s plenty of work and not that many days off, but the sunshine, the warmth, and the people around you make up for a lot.
