A WORD ON SAFETY
Raya Divers has been operating in Thailand since 2000 and has an excellent safety record. Raya Divers CEO Jiri Wickström shares some of his thoughts on this topic.
Could you tell us a bit about Raya Divers’ approach to safety and customer care?
– At Raya Divers, we always say it’s not about the days when everything goes as planned – it’s about how you act when the unexpected happens. Our commitment to preparation and safety is at the core of our philosophy. Every step of our operations is designed to ensure a safe and memorable experience for our customers, even when conditions change.
What does this preparation mean in practice?
– It all begins with the basics, like documentation and permits. We ensure that all necessary tourist licenses and National Park fees are in order, and every customer completes medical and liability forms. Insurance is included in all our activities, and we carefully plan every detail of each excursion day.
– For land transport, we use air-conditioned minibuses with seat belts, and our drivers are trained to prioritize safety and drive carefully at all times. At sea, we only use vessels that undergo strict daily and monthly safety inspections. Only licensed captains operate our boats, and passenger limits are strictly enforced.
What other safety practices does Raya Divers have?
– We pay special attention to equipment maintenance. From life jackets to diving gear, everything is high-quality, regularly inspected, and serviced. All our staff members are trained in first aid, and their skills are continuously practiced. A safety briefing is held before each excursion, and every guide has a thorough knowledge of the marine environment.
How do you handle unpredictable situations, like sudden weather changes?
– We constantly monitor weather and environmental conditions and supervise groups both on the surface and underwater. We have prepared and practiced emergency and contingency plans, in case they are needed. If the weather conditions aren’t favorable, we won’t head out to sea. We reschedule trips at no extra charge, as safety is always the top priority.
Beyond safety, what makes Raya Divers’ excursions unique?
– It’s the combination of many small details. We don’t just take customers to the nearest spots to save time and costs; instead, our trips lead to the most interesting locations. We also provide guidance on equipment use, the marine environment, and responsible travel, so guests get much more out of each trip.
